Hey Reader, Alison here!
It's been a wild and wonderful few months in my world with speaking at the ADPList BeMore Festival, launching the current Design Leadership Accelerator cohort, and working with Coaching Clients.
Here are some nuggets from across my world that I hope inspire you:
Do the dang thing – Do it scared, do it feeling like an imposter, do it ANYWAY. Especially if you are a woman or person of color. The world needs your voice and we want to hear it! So many things are on the other side of our inner critic who is trying to protect us from something.
Careers are no longer linear – collect experiences that inspire you, and embrace what you are drawn towards. You can see my full talk on this and self-advocacy on YouTube here. It was such a joy to host this and the Women in Design Leadership panel last month.
Identity Reinvention is human
Our identities change as we age as we go through life and career experiences, and we have to redefine not only who we are, how we show up in the world, what our purpose is, and how we are going to spend our valuable and short time. Even at work.
What you wanted in your early 20s is drastically different from your mid to late 30s. As you reach your 50s and 60s and then consider what you want your later stages in life to look like there are different moments of reinvention. The connection between our careers and our total identity gets shaken up through promotions, layoffs, job-changes, company acquisitions etc.
When change happens to us as humans we experience it fairly negatively, we lose our sense of agency, our sense of the identity we had before change was thrust upon us. When working for large companies, this type of change is constant.
When we spark the change we're ready to make in our lives, we feel empowered. We feel powerful. We are inspired to rise from wherever we were before. I think reinvention therefore becomes a fundamental career skill to learn and adapt. To expect rather than fear. Sometimes fear of the new and unknown and untested can paralyze us and keep us stuck in both old situations and old identities that no longer serve us.
Each of these career moments require a different identity.
Each of these inspire a different you.
Coaching Prompts: What identities are you shifting between? Who are you becoming? Where does this feed your energy?
