This week, I'm considering how leaders continuously show up for the teams, while also balancing the realities of their own energy tanks. There is no perfection here, you are a human too and can't always show up exactly as you planned.
In the recent cohort of my Manager Foundations course, we dug into redesigning our calendars to not only reflect the biggest impact opportunities, but also to manage our energy pro-actively.
Time-blocking in advance so that you have space saved to manage your energy becomes really important during stressful periods, and also on typical weeks. With so many Managers I'm working with hitting new walls of exhaustion, this is SO important to build in.
When you are most at need of replenishment is when you are least likely to make decisions that are truly good for you. This is real science – the more stressed, the more likely our bodies are to crave junk food and a quick sugar bump, and our will power capacity is reduced.
Have a sticky note or doc somewhere that includes a menu of truly replenishing activities for you. This is not things that check a self-care box, but are things you know (or want to experiment with) refill your cup.
Examples range from a walk outside, doing a puzzle in silence, meditation, petting animals, a pedicure, cleaning or dancing it out. No judgement zone as it's just for you!
I'm curious – what comes to mind for your go-to Energy Menu? Reply and let me know!
📢 LAST CALL IN '24! 📢 For aspiring or new Managers – this is the training I wish I'd had as I stepped into leading fellow humans. Last 2024 Cohort starts October 28th.
On a personal front, the past month has included some big transitions! Back-to-school kinda kicked my butt with a new school (middle school for my eldest) and new EARLY routines. I was not as ready as I thought I was, but my lesson was in observing my son who was more than ready. It was a glimpse as a parent into following my kids lead at times and trusting in them to know themselves.
I had an influx of new coaching clients too so lots of juicy Discovery Sessions as we kicked off our engagements. In these first sessions, we start with Values. Did you know I have a no-cost workbook that you can use to explore your personal and professional Values? Yep. Here it is for you to begin some self-discovery.
Don't be strangers! Alison x
p.s. The lovely Kristiana Corona and I had an in-depth chat about toxic manager traits (that we all my show!) and more on her podcast Worthy to Lead.
