Hey Reader,
Do you worry about becoming a Manager of other humans?
Are you a Manager thrown into the deep end of figuring things out?
Do you feel like an imposter when you don't have the skills or knowledge you wish?
Yeah, being a Manager is TOUGH. And it can be so REWARDING.
You won't have the answers, and that's ok
A lesson that has stuck with me in all of my management experiences (even at VP level) is that we live in the shades of grey not knowing the answer to some of the VERY reasonable questions our teams may ask us. Part of maturing in your leadership is finding ways to respond and answer as much of the tough questions as you can, while maintain your poise, authenticity and authority.
If you've got a messy middle question, I'd love to hear them.
I'll send you back a personal voice clip with my answer. 🤘🏼
Learning to embrace the mess is key
One of the best muscles you can build if/as you step into Management is adaptability. Being at the ready to pivot each day depending on what shows up is critical. I just shared the concept of "Buffer Time" in my Manager Foundations class, and want to share it with you too.

You will always, ALWAYS have unexpected things occur in a week. Last minute conversations, employee needs, you name it. As a Manager, your time is not always your own each day. Buffer Time allows you the ability to pivot daily as needed, without the cascading impact of reschedules. Plan for the unexpected, and as a bonus, if nothing surprising occurs, you have time to use towards your priorities. |
